CompTIA A+ certification (also known as CompTIA A Plus) is an international industry credential that validates the knowledge of computer service technicians with the equivalent of 500 hours of hands-on experience. The skills and knowledge measured by the CompTIA A+ exams are vendor neutral and are derived from an industry-wide and worldwide job task analysis. CompTIA A+ exam is actually one of the few tests that requires you to pass not just one, but two parts:

220-601: A+ Essentials
220-602: A+ IT Technician
220-603: A+ Remote Support Technician
220-604: A+ Depot Technician

Exam 220-601: A+ Essentials
CompTIA’s A+ 220-601 Essentials Exam is one of two exams required to achieve the A+ 2006 certification as an IT Techician, Remote Support Technician, or a Depot Technician. The exam is meant for entry-level computer professionals, such as desktop support specialists, remote administrators, and depot assemblers. This exam and has no prerequisites.
This exam is designed for a + PC service technician with the equivalent knowledge of at least 500 hours of hands-on experience in the lab or field." And is considered an entry-level exam
Unlike the previous iteration of this exam, it will no longer involve questions on legacy operating systems, such as Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Additionally, the A+ 220-601 exam will involve questions that deal with soft skills and office communication. Candidates that are familiar with computer technology, but unfamiliar with service communication would do well to study up on the proper method of assisting customers, coworkers, and superiors.
This exam is offered in English, Dutch, Japanese, French, Spanish and German. It may be taken from Pearson Vue or Thomson Prometric. In terms of cost: Prices of CompTIA exams vary, depending upon the country you are taking the test in and your membership status. In the US, prices range from $93 USD to $225 USD. The 220-601 exam is 90 minutes long. In order to pass this exam, you must achieve a score of 645 or better on a scale of 900. The areas of concentration on the exam include:

A+ IT Technician

CompTIA’s A+ 220-602 Exam is one of two exams required to achieve the A+ 2006 certification. It is meant for technicians in an enterprise level of environment that will involve a great deal of human interaction. This exam is meant for individuals that have already passed the A+ Essentials exam and have a fairly firm foundation in the material.

The previous iteration of this exam was designed for a PC service technician with the equivalent knowledge of at least 500 hours of hands-on experience in the lab or field and consisted of two exams, one for Operating Systems and one for Hardware. With the new changes to this exam, candidates can look forward to seeing more applicative and case scenario style questions.
